Stars Reach Promises Professions and Combat Upgrades
Stars Reach knows what its players want. Raph Koster said it plainly in the sandbox MMO's latest developer video: "Everybody's waiting for loops, right?"
That one line sums up where the early access project stands. The building tools keep getting richer, but the gameplay loops that give players a reason to log in every day are still largely on the to-do list. According to the team, professions and combat are what come next.
Professions Are Up First
The video doesn't go into much detail about what these additions will look like. The developers say a full breakdown will arrive in a roadmap post next week, so anyone expecting a feature list from this stream will have to wait a few more days.
What we did get is a look at how the team is thinking. Koster and company admit there have been "a lot of debates" internally over which professions should arrive first. Three candidates came up by name:
- Xenobiology
- Rangering
- Foraging
That's a telling shortlist. None of these are pure crafting jobs or straight combat roles. They all point toward exploring the world and dealing with what lives in it, which fits a sandbox that has so far put most of its energy into letting players shape their surroundings.
Combat is the other big item. The developers promise it will get considerably more attention going forward. There aren't specifics yet, and it's fair to read that as an acknowledgement that fighting hasn't been the game's strong point during early access so far.
Smaller Fixes on the Way
A couple of quality-of-life changes are also in progress. The GovBot is getting revisions, and storage tech is being updated to give players more room to hoard their stuff. For anyone who has spent time in a sandbox MMO, that last one matters more than it sounds. Running out of space to stash materials is one of those quiet annoyances that pushes people away from building projects.
Mostly a Building Showcase
Despite the headline promises, the bulk of the stream was about content that's already in the game. Most of the runtime went to the recently added paints, finishes and building pieces, which let players decorate and customize their structures in more detail.
The final stretch was a Q&A. Viewers asked about enemy behaviors, the UI, whether a circular floor piece could be added, and whether weapons could be painted. It's a pretty good snapshot of the community's priorities: half of those questions are about how the game plays, the other half about how it looks.
Our Take
This update suggests Stars Reach is reaching a familiar point for sandbox games in early access. The creative tools draw people in, but tools alone rarely keep them around. Koster's comment about loops reads as an open admission of that, and it's refreshing to hear a developer say it out loud rather than dance around it.
The early profession shortlist is worth paying attention to. Xenobiology, rangering and foraging all lean on the living world rather than on player-built structures, which could give the game a second pillar next to its building systems. Whether those professions tie into combat, the economy or both is the real question, and next week's roadmap should start to answer it.
Open developer communication like this is becoming common across the genre, from ArcheAge S's dev diaries to smaller sci-fi projects like Nova Era: Atom's Steam playtest. The difference comes down to follow-through. For Stars Reach, it's worth watching whether the roadmap brings concrete timelines for professions and combat, or whether building content keeps taking up most of the spotlight. Players have been told loops are coming. Now they'll want to see when.
