Complexity Shuts Down After 23 Years in Esports
Complexity is done.
After 23 years, one of North America's oldest esports brands has officially stopped operating. Owner and figurehead Jason Lake confirmed the news in a video posted to social media on September 23, 2026. Ownership of the organisation now goes back to GameSquare, the company that held it before Lake's attempt to take full control.
It's a quiet ending for a name that meant a great deal to a certain generation of players. It also feels like the last step in a long retreat rather than a sudden collapse.
Why Complexity Wound Down
The explanation is about money. According to Lake, he and his team couldn't raise enough capital to do two things at once: buy Complexity outright from GameSquare and keep it competitive at the tier-one level. They couldn't manage both, and it seems they couldn't make the numbers work for just one either.
