Skate Mid-Season Update Adds Park, Tests Proximity Chat
Skate is about to get a little bigger. Barring a last-minute delay to the next season, Full Circle's early access skateboarding sandbox reaches the midpoint of its current season on Tuesday, October 13th. As usual, that means a patch.
This one adds places to ride, missions to finish, and a test of something players have wanted to try in a skating game: talking to whoever happens to be rolling past.
Strictly speaking, not every location in this update is new. One is brand new. The other has existed for a while, but only for players who paid for it. Both are worth a look.
Parry Point Skatepark opens in Hedgemont
The new addition is Parry Point Skatepark, located in the Hedgemont neighborhood. It's a street park, and Full Circle says real-world spots inspired its design. That's a good sign. Skate has always worked best when its spaces feel like somewhere you might find on a Saturday afternoon rather than something built only for a game.
The layout leans on rails, small ramps, and plenty of open ground. That isn't the stuff of mega-ramp highlight reels. It's the kind of park where people tend to gather, mess around, and stay longer than they meant to. Full Circle is clearly pitching Parry Point as a new social spot, and in a game built around a shared playground, that matters more than any single gap or ledge.
S.U.M.R. Camp comes down from behind the paywall
The other location is S.U.M.R. Camp. Until now, only premium pass owners could get in. With the mid-season patch, free players can access it too, though not permanently.
Free players unlock it with Rip Chips, an in-game currency earned by playing. Each unlock lasts 24 hours. That gets them access to the camp's big air ramps and the rest of its features, at least for a day at a time. New missions are also being added at S.U.M.R. Camp, and those are open to all players, not only pass holders.
It's a sensible compromise. Paying players keep their permanent access, and everyone else can see what the fuss is about without opening their wallet.
Music, tricks, trees, and voice chat
The remaining patch notes are a mixed bag:
- 19 new music tracks for the soundtrack
- No comply improvements, aimed at making that trick behave better
- World improvements, mostly to tree foliage
- A technical test of proximity voice chat, running from October 21st to November 3rd
The voice chat test is the most interesting item on that list. It's limited to the Isle of Grom location, so it isn't a game-wide rollout. Players will hear other people based on how close they are in the world, rather than through a party channel. Calling it a technical test also makes clear that it's still an experiment, not a finished feature.
Full Circle also has more lined up. The studio is teasing a "major" mid-season event for October 16th, three days after the patch goes live. Details are promised next week, so for now that's all we know.
Our Take
On paper, this is a modest mid-season patch. One new park, one unlocked location, some tracks, some polish. But it does tell us something about where Skate is heading.
Opening S.U.M.R. Camp to free players through earnable Rip Chips suggests Full Circle wants to keep content gated by money without completely shutting non-paying players out. It's a model worth watching. Other live games, such as ARC Raiders going free-to-play, have recently looked for ways to lower the entry barrier. Whether 24-hour unlocks feel fair or turn into a grind will depend on how fast Rip Chips actually come in.
The proximity chat test could be the bigger story. Skate already wants to be a hangout, and Parry Point is designed as exactly that. Letting strangers talk across a park could make those spaces feel alive, or it could make them noisy and hard to moderate. Running a limited technical test on one location first seems like the cautious way to find out. It's also worth watching what the October 16th event turns out to be.
