League of Legends Classic Shuts Down in January 2027

League of Legends Classic is on its way out.

Riot Games launched the nostalgia-driven mode in July and pitched it as a chance to step back into an older version of its MOBA. Only a few months later, the studio has decided the experiment has run its course, at least for now. Classic will stay playable until the end of the current season, and it will close in January 2027.

Riot's explanation is refreshingly plain. Players came, they played, and then most of them went back to the game they already knew. "We've seen a lot of players have fun revisiting the olden days with Classic. At this point though, most have gone back to other parts of League," the studio writes.

That isn't a damning verdict. Nobody is claiming the mode was broken or unloved. It simply didn't hold an audience large enough to justify running it as a permanent fixture next to the main game. In a live-service world, that is often the only verdict that counts.

What happens between now and January

Riot isn't just flipping a switch and walking away. The studio has outlined several changes that will shape Classic's final stretch.

First, refunds. Riot is issuing them for Classic-specific content that will no longer have any use once the mode closes. If you put money into items tied only to Classic, that money isn't simply gone.

Second, the next battle pass for the mode will come with a free track only. There's no premium tier to buy for a mode with an end date already on the calendar, which is the sensible call.

Third, the Classic store is being trimmed down. Going forward, it will only stock characters, runes and rune pages.

Finally, Riot is changing the queue windows. The studio warns that this may lead to longer matchmaking times. That fits the picture of a shrinking player base: when fewer people are queuing, the system has to look harder and wait longer to fill a lobby. Anyone planning one last nostalgia trip before January should expect some waiting.

Not gone for good

This isn't a permanent goodbye. Riot says it intends to "put Classic back in the box for now, with the goal of bringing it back, likely as an event mode with adjustments and additions."

That phrasing matters. Classic as an always-on mode is ending, but Classic as a rotating, limited-time event looks like the plan. The studio also admits the next version can't simply be a rerun of this one.

"There's more we're going to share in the future about what we learned from this run. That includes where we think we got Classic right, where we could have gone more classic, and where sticking too closely to the past may have held the experience back," Riot writes.

It's an unusually candid line. In one sentence, the studio admits it may have been too faithful in some places and not faithful enough in others. That's the central problem with any trip back in time: the past people remember and the past they actually want to play are rarely the same thing.

Riot is also asking for input. "Please continue to let us know what you love and don't love about Classic. Your feedback is a vital part of how we make our games and is always appreciated," the studio adds.

Our Take

Nostalgia is a powerful hook, but Classic's short run suggests it's a much weaker anchor. Plenty of studios are betting on the past right now. Nexon has just opened founder access for MapleStory Classic World, and fan projects keep reviving older games. League is a different case, though. The modern version never went away, so Classic wasn't bringing back a lost game. It was competing with its own successor, and the successor won.

Moving to an event mode seems like the right fit. Short, focused windows can turn nostalgia into a treat instead of a chore. It is worth watching how Riot handles the "too classic" problem it mentions, and whether a reworked event can hold players longer than a few weeks. The refunds are also a decent example of how to wind down paid content, especially compared with the frustration that tends to surround full game shutdowns. For now, Classic players have until January to enjoy it.
