Old School RuneScape Grand Exchange Breaks the 2.147B Cap
For most Old School RuneScape players, 2.147 billion coins is a number that might as well be fiction. For a small slice of the community, though, it has been a very real wall.
Until this week, that figure was the ceiling for anything you could buy through the Grand Exchange, the game's built-in auction house. If an item cost more than that, the Grand Exchange simply couldn't handle the trade. Jagex's latest patch changes that, although the fix comes with a bit of extra work.
A workaround for the wealthiest
The cap itself isn't going anywhere. Item stacks and coin piles in Old School RuneScape are still limited to a maximum of 2.147B. What has changed is what the Grand Exchange will accept as payment. It now takes a combination of coins and platinum tokens, an existing in-game currency item, so a buyer can put together an offer that goes past the old price ceiling.
It's not the most elegant solution. Players have to juggle two forms of currency rather than typing in one big number. But it works, and more importantly, it keeps those enormous transactions inside the game.
That matters because the alternative was pretty grim. Before the patch, anyone trying to buy or sell an item priced above the cap had to go outside the Grand Exchange to get it done. That meant third-party sites or other external arrangements, with players left hoping the deal was legitimate. When the sums involved are this large, "hoping" is not a comfortable position to be in.
Now those trades can happen safely through the official auction house. There are a couple of caveats worth knowing, though. Any trade restrictions that already applied are still in place, so the update doesn't open the doors to players who were previously locked out. The Grand Exchange's broker fees also still apply, which means the house still takes its cut on these huge deals, just as it does on everyday ones.
RuneFest 2026 is days away
The Grand Exchange change isn't the only thing on the Old School calendar. Jagex has also been building anticipation for RuneFest 2026, its annual celebration of the RuneScape franchise.
The event kicks off on Saturday, October 3. Jagex has promised summits packed with information for all three RuneScape games, so players of every version of the game should have something to look forward to. There's also a PvP invitational on the schedule, which should appeal to the competitive end of the community.
If you were hoping to go in person, you're out of luck. Tickets for the live event have already sold out. The good news is that the show will be livestreamed, so everyone else can still follow along from home. Jagex is also running celebratory giveaways in the run-up to the event through its Discord server.
RuneFest arrives at a busy moment for the wider franchise. Over on the main game, Jagex recently rolled out RuneScape's Havenhythe Part II, billed as its largest area expansion. With three games to cover, the summits will have a lot of ground to get through.
Our Take
On paper, a change to how one auction house handles payment sounds minor. In practice, it closes a gap that pushed some of the game's most valuable trades into channels Jagex couldn't see or protect. Big-money deals happening off-platform are exactly where scams tend to thrive, so bringing them back in-house looks like a sensible safety move as much as a convenience one.
It's also hard not to read it alongside Jagex's recent approach to its economy more broadly. The studio has set November 23 for a microtransaction item purge in the main RuneScape game, which suggests a company paying close attention to how value moves through its worlds. Other long-running MMORPGs are doing similar housekeeping, from EVE Online's Python 3 changes to various exploit fixes.
The obvious question is whether the two-currency method is a stopgap or a permanent answer. It is worth watching whether RuneFest brings any word on further Grand Exchange or economy changes. If it does, Saturday's livestream will be the place to hear it first.
