RuneScape Reignited: Jagex Apologizes to Angry Veterans

RuneScape's Reignited characters were supposed to be a celebration.

Instead, they turned into a mess. What Jagex clearly planned as one of the headline moments of this year's RuneFest showcase has instead sparked one of the louder community backlashes the sandbox MMORPG has seen in a while. Now the studio is doing something publishers rarely do this plainly: it's saying sorry.

What Reignited Was Meant to Be

The pitch sounded appealing on paper. Reignited characters would let both newcomers and existing players experience RuneScape from a fresh angle. That meant a set of refinements, an economy built specifically for these characters, and the chance to chase world firsts all over again. For anyone who missed the early races or never got the chance to compete for those milestones, that's a genuinely tempting offer.

But the people who have kept RuneScape alive for years didn't see it that way.

The Veteran Backlash

Over on Reddit, long-time players weren't buying it. Thread after thread popped up arguing that Reignited would split the playerbase in two. Others felt that the years they had poured into their characters were simply being brushed aside in favor of a shiny new starting point. That's a familiar fear in long-running online games - when a developer builds something exciting for fresh characters, the people with a decade of progress can start to wonder where they fit in.

The noise didn't fade. It was loud enough, and lasted long enough, that Jagex published a dedicated dev blog addressing Reignited head-on.

"Let's Not Mince Words"

The post doesn't ease into things. It opens with an apology, and a fairly blunt one.

"Let's not mince words here. We have made you, as existing players, feel like you are no longer our focus. That's entirely on us and of our own making, and it's only right we open by saying sorry," Jagex wrote.

The studio went on to defend the idea behind the feature, saying that Reignited "comes from a good place" and is tied to its promise to grow the community. But it also conceded that "none of that matters if it comes at cost to you," adding: "We missed our mark on making Veterans a clearer part of this idea."

What Jagex Is Promising

The apology came with a list of commitments. Jagex says it will:

  • Keep more veteran progress intact and represented on a Reignited character
  • Reduce friction for veteran players who interact with Reignited characters
  • Look into ways to prevent a split in the playerbase
  • Integrate Reignited with ongoing subscriptions

What it didn't offer was detail. There's no breakdown yet of how much progress carries over, what "removing friction" actually looks like in practice, or how the subscription integration will work. Jagex says more information is coming later this week.

The Community Isn't Convinced

The response to the dev blog has been mixed at best. Some players are taking a wait-and-see stance, and a few have said they appreciate finally feeling heard. But they look to be outnumbered by the skeptics. Some have made sarcastic bingo cards mocking the post, others have dismissed it as a nothingburger, and in a couple of cases players have said they will cancel their subscriptions because Reignited is still going ahead at all.

So no, this isn't settled. Not even close.

Our Take

There's something to respect here. Plenty of studios would have buried a backlash like this under carefully neutral PR language. Jagex led with "sorry" and admitted the problem was "entirely on us." That counts for something.

But an apology without specifics is just a mood. Right now, veterans have been told their progress will matter more and the community won't be split - without being shown how. That gap is exactly why the bingo cards are circulating. Players who have heard promises before tend to judge by what ships, not by what gets posted in a blog.

The tension at the heart of Reignited is one almost every long-running MMO runs into eventually. Fresh starts are one of the best tools a studio has to pull in new players and reignite (sorry) interest among lapsed ones. Yet every fresh start quietly asks existing players whether their years of effort still mean anything. Get the balance wrong, and the newcomers you were courting arrive to a community that feels resentful and divided.

It's also worth remembering that this isn't happening in a vacuum. Jagex has a lot going on right now, including the reveal of a fourth RuneScape MMORPG built in Unreal. With so many projects competing for attention, veterans may simply be more sensitive to any sign that their game is sliding down the priority list.

The real test is the follow-up update promised later this week. If Jagex can show concrete numbers on carried-over progress and a clear plan for keeping Reignited and veteran players in the same world, this could end up as a course correction that people forget about. If it's more vague reassurance, it's worth watching whether those subscription cancellations stay a handful of cases - or start to grow.
