Fractured: Conquest Shows Faction Minions, New Playtest Soon
Fractured: Conquest is still very much alive, and it has a new playtest on the way.
If the name doesn't ring a bell, that's understandable. Conquest is the top-down reworking of Fractured Online, and the result is a very different kind of game from the one it grew out of. It has been quiet enough lately that some players may have forgotten it exists. The developers want to change that. Their latest dispatch on the official site gives a first look at the melee minions for each of the game's three factions, previews a new War Wagon, and promises that details about the next test are coming soon.
A playtest date, eventually
The playtest is the part most people will care about, and it's also the part with the fewest answers. The new update thanks everyone who took part in the most recent test, but it doesn't say when the next one will happen. The date hasn't been set yet. The team says it will be announced over the coming month.
So October is the month to keep an eye on. Anyone hoping to get back into the game's three-way battles should watch the official site, because that is where the announcement is expected.
It's a familiar pattern for projects still in testing. Studios share plans in small pieces, and players wait for a firm date. We've seen the same approach this season with the ArcheAge Chronicles PvP demo and a growing list of open playtests elsewhere. Fractured: Conquest is simply further from a confirmed date than most of them.
Three factions, three looks
While players wait, the developers have something to show. The latest update focuses on the melee units that each faction sends into battle, and the art direction is clearly meant to tell the three sides apart at a glance.
According to the update:
- The Thorn and the Wardens both have melee unit models that are close to finished.
- The Order's version still needs more modeling work.
- Each design is meant to reflect its faction's ethos, in both overall look and silhouette.
The materials make the differences clear. One faction's soldiers wear layered metal armor. Another's are built from stone and woven vines. The third is covered in crystal. In a top-down game, where you usually see units from far above, distinct shapes and materials like these matter. When a fight gets crowded, you need to know immediately whose troops are whose.
Rolling out the War Wagon
The update also previews the new War Wagon. The developers haven't said much about how it works in play, but it's one more piece of the battlefield being built for Conquest. If you're curious, the preview is on the official site alongside the unit designs.
Our Take
Fractured: Conquest is in an unusual position. It isn't a fresh project with no history. It's a reinvention of an existing MMO, rebuilt from a top-down perspective into what the team itself presents as a very different sort of game. That kind of pivot always brings two challenges: winning over newcomers and holding on to anyone who stuck with the original.
This update suggests the studio knows that visibility matters. Showing off minion designs and a War Wagon while the playtest date is still pending is a sensible way to keep people interested. It also hints at where the game's identity is heading. The focus on three clearly different factions points to a game built around readable, large-scale clashes rather than the solo adventuring of a traditional MMO.
The top-down idea is also catching on elsewhere, with projects like Project S.U.N.D.I.A.L. applying that camera angle to other multiplayer genres. Whether Conquest can stand out in that field will depend far more on how it plays than on how its minions look.
That's why the next playtest matters. It's worth watching whether the date arrives in October as promised, whether the Order's units are finished by then, and how the War Wagon actually changes a match. Concept art can build interest, but only hands-on time will show whether this new direction for Fractured works.
