Zenless Zone Zero 3.3 Adds Mechs, Phoenix on October 21
Roscaelifer has gone quiet, and that's a problem.
Anyone who finished the previous Zenless Zone Zero update will remember how it ended. The investigation wrapped up, our friends were pulled out of the hands of The Cunning Hares, and then the line to Roscaelifer simply went dead. Nobody up there can be reached. Not our sibling, not Fairy, and not Roxy, who had travelled to the floating city specifically to pass along a message.
Version 3.3 picks up that thread on October 21. Based on what was shown in today's special program, the free-to-play action RPG is finally ready to explain what went wrong.
Who Took the City in the Sky
The answer to "what happened" is High Ambitions Corp. The TOPS company has seized control of Roscaelifer, and it has designs on the Sunbringer trio. Those designs have not gone unnoticed.
Phoenix, an agent of Krampus, was already in the city trying to get the Proxies to stop exactly what ended up happening. Cissia had a very literal run-in with her along the way. Phoenix failed to prevent the takeover, so she has now formed a temporary alliance with Severian, a senior commissioner of PubSec, the game's public security force. It's not a warm partnership. But both want the same thing: High Ambitions Corp.'s plans shut down.
The story should also shed more light on Sunbringer and Helios. Whether it delivers full answers or just more questions is another matter.
Two New S-Rank Agents
Both of these reluctant allies are joining the playable roster.
Phoenix arrives first, available as soon as Version 3.3 goes live on October 21. She is an S-Rank Fire Anomaly Agent, and her standout trick is self-resurrection. There is a catch, though - the ability has limits, so treating her as immortal isn't a plan. Her banner runs alongside a rerun of Velina.
Severian follows in the update's second phase Signal search. He is an S-Rank Wind Attack agent, and his banner comes paired with a rerun of Norma.
Both characters also get alternative outfits in the in-game shop. Phoenix has two. Severian has one, and it's a familiar look: the same suit he wore when he gave players a jumpscare in their own video store.
Mechs Are Here, and They're Staying
The most interesting addition isn't a character. It's a new style of combat.
During the push back into Roscaelifer, players will climb into combat mechs that swap between melee and ranged attacks. That alone would be a fun one-off for a story chapter. But according to the special program, mech gameplay won't stop with 3.3 - it is set to carry forward into future versions.
Halloween and a Murder Mystery
Version 3.3 also brings a batch of spooky Halloween events. Crowe and Hobble are back for more detective work, too, and this time the case is personal: someone tried to kill Crowe. Given how little we actually know about the man, the list of suspects could be very long indeed.
As usual, the stream came with a redemption code. Punch in JRNY2SKY, and do it soon - these codes don't tend to hang around.
The Bigger Picture
The headline here is the mech combat. New agents are expected in every Zenless Zone Zero update - that's how the banner model works. A new gameplay layer that the developers say will continue into later versions is a different kind of commitment. It suggests the team wants to vary how fights feel, not just who is fighting them.
That fits a busy October for free-to-play action titles in this space, with the Arknights: Endfield October 15 update and Duet Night Abyss's returning event all chasing the same players' attention.
It is worth watching how deep the mech system actually goes. If it's a story gimmick dressed up as a feature, players will notice quickly. If it grows into something with real depth, it could become one of the more meaningful shifts the game has made.
