Moonwhisper Games MMORPG Reveals Its Elves and Humans

If you have been waiting for someone to hand you a pair of pointed ears and a tragic history, Moonwhisper Games has good news. The studio's MMORPG, which still has no name and is still deep in development, will let players choose elves, and the latest preview makes clear these are not the cheerful, tree-hugging kind.

The reveal focuses on the playable elves of Iretheia, and it is almost entirely about lore and concept art. There are no numbers, no skill trees and no combat footage. What we get instead is a people with a very grim origin story, and a strong sense that they would rather you kept your hands away from their ears.

Born for war

According to Moonwhisper, these elves did not simply evolve in some peaceful forest. They were created for the specific purpose of fighting a war. After they won a crucial battle, the elves were left to their own devices and had to build a society from scratch.

What they built values three things above everything else: devotion to craft, magic and knowledge. That is a neat twist on a race that started out as a weapon. A people made for killing ends up prizing the patient work of the artisan and the scholar.

The peace did not last forever, though. The preview also describes a war involving the elves that ended with the death of a great hero. That loss pushed the race into isolation, which goes a long way towards explaining the brooding mood in the artwork.

Humans, and dwarves before them

The elves are not the first race Moonwhisper has put on show. Before this preview, the studio walked through its playable human civilization. That look centred on the capital city of Anterose, the humans' faith, and the story of an empire that fell and then rose again.

In other words, the humans here seem to share the trait fantasy humans usually have: they get knocked down and get back up. It is familiar territory, but familiar is not always a bad thing for a genre that runs on archetypes.

A preview of the playable dwarves came before both of these, and it followed the same pattern. Each reveal is designed to give players a feel for one race and to hint at the events that will probably drive the game's story once it arrives.

What we still don't know

Here is the problem. For all the history, we still have almost no idea what kind of game this actually is. Moonwhisper is made up of former TurtleWoW developers, so players may have their own assumptions about where the studio's instincts lie. But the team has not yet shown how its own MMO will play. How combat works, how the world is structured, how groups or guilds fit in - none of that has been covered so far.

What we can say for sure is that elves and humans will be playable, and dwarves have been shown too. Everything beyond that is still a blank page.

Our Take

Lore-first reveals are nothing new in the MMORPG space. Plenty of projects are drip-feeding previews right now, whether it is ArcheAge Chronicles spotlighting its Berserker class or smaller studios like the team behind Stars Reach promising profession and combat upgrades. The difference is that those updates at least point to how the games play. Moonwhisper's approach suggests a studio that is building its world before it is ready to show its systems. That is not a red flag on its own, but it does limit how excited anyone can reasonably get.

The TurtleWoW connection is the most interesting thread here. With World of Warcraft nostalgia still strong elsewhere, including Blizzard's own WoW Forever class spotlights, it is worth watching whether Moonwhisper leans into that classic style or carves out something different. The next step to look for is simple: a name, and a first look at actual gameplay.
