Neverness to Everness 1.4 Adds Akane Rin on October 21

Neverness to Everness 1.4 Adds Akane Rin on October 21

If you watched anime in the late 2000s, Neverness to Everness has a song waiting for you. The multiplayer gacha RPG is preparing the second half of its Version 1.4 update, titled For Whom the Verses Mourn, and it goes live on Wednesday, October 21st. That half brings a new playable character with a guitar, a band, and a very specific taste in cover songs.

The update also lines up with the game's half-year anniversary. That means a pile of free currency and a cosmetic for anyone who logs in once the patch is live.

Meet Akane Rin

The star of this phase is Akane Rin, a new S-class character. In gacha games, a "gacha" is a randomized pull system where players spend currency for a chance to unlock characters and items, and S-class generally marks the top tier of rarity. Rin plays guitar and sings lead for a band called The Whoots!!!! Yes, that is four exclamation marks, and yes, that appears to be the official name.

Rin isn't arriving quietly. She and her bandmates sit at the center of a new story chapter set during a school festival. Players can take part in the festivities, meet the band in person, and learn more about Rin and the people she plays with. For a gacha RPG, this is a familiar move. A new character rarely just shows up in the pull menu. They usually get a story built around them so players know who they are before deciding whether to spend currency chasing them.

A Familiar Song

You don't have to wait until October 21st to hear what The Whoots!!!! sound like. The band has already released a performance video covering "God Knows...", the song from the anime The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

For a certain group of players, that choice will hit hard. "God Knows..." is a classic of its era, and hearing a new character cover it is a quick way to make some of the audience feel old. It's also a smart pick. Plenty of character announcements lean on trailers and ability breakdowns. Leading with a cover of a song many anime fans already know is a more personal kind of pitch, and it tells you exactly who the developers want to reach.

The video is out now, so anyone curious can judge the performance before the patch arrives.

Half-Anniversary Rewards

The second part of the October 21st update is the half-year anniversary celebration. Neverness to Everness will hand out 2 million Fons, the game's currency, along with an outfit for Rin.

Half-anniversaries can seem a bit odd if you mostly play traditional PC or console games. Most series only mark full years, if they mark them at all. In the gacha and mobile space, though, a six-month celebration is common practice. Whatever the reasoning, the result for players is simple: free in-game money and a free cosmetic. Nobody is going to complain about that.

The rewards and the new story chapter both go live on the 21st, so returning or lapsed players will want to mark that date.

A Busy Week for Gacha Fans

Neverness to Everness won't have October 21st to itself. Zenless Zone Zero 3.3 is also scheduled for the same day. Players who split their time between several of these games will have to decide where their evening goes. Arknights: Endfield has also had its own October character update this month, which gives a sense of how crowded the genre's release calendar has become.

Our Take

On paper this is a modest update: one new character, one story event, and a batch of anniversary freebies. The way it's packaged is what makes it interesting. Leading with a nostalgic anime cover instead of combat footage suggests the team behind Neverness to Everness knows its audience well. They are betting that an emotional connection will sell Rin as much as her place on a tier list.

The timing matters too. Six months is an early checkpoint for a live-service game, and anniversary events are usually where developers try to win back players who have drifted away. Two million Fons and a free outfit is a clear invitation to come back. Other games handle these milestones in a similar way. Brawlhalla marked its birthday with fresh content and an event, for example. The approach seems to be standard across free-to-play and live-service titles.

There are a few things worth watching. One is whether the school festival story gives The Whoots!!!! enough personality to carry future content. Another is how players respond to Rin as an S-class addition. The biggest open question is whether a shared launch day with Zenless Zone Zero splits the attention of players who follow both. For now, the song is out, and the rest arrives on Wednesday.
